Just 3 things this CF week

We asked a colleague living with cystic fibrosis (CF), what 3 things schools could do that would make a positive difference to someone living with a chronic health condition?

This is what they said:

1. Don’t just assume falling behind academically is always related to missing school. Check out if there are specific learning needs unrelated to the health condition. It’s easy to put everything down to missed lessons rather than consider the bigger picture.

2. CF, like some other chronic health conditions, is often a hidden condition; appearances can be deceptive. Look a bit deeper. We all want to fit in so it’s tempting to say you’re fine when you’re not. Take time to quietly check out how someone is really feeling.

3. Time in hospital not only means missing learning, but it also excludes you socially. Getting messages and cards from teachers and classmates when you’re in hospital helps you feel you’re still part of the group and that people are thinking about you.
