Time for change
As we come to the end of another school year, we know it’s been very difficult for some children, families and schools. Increasing concerns about school attendance, levels of poverty, and ever-increasing waits for the right mental health support and treatment are just some of the issues schools have been grappling with. It can feel hopeless.
We know there are pockets of great work going on to deal with these challenges but too often we’ve seen barriers created by an inflexible school curriculum and assessment system. Frustrating at best, damaging at worse.
Like many, we’re hoping the new school year will bring change for the better. We’d like to see an open and honest discussion on how all children and young people can be included in a school system that’s responsive to individual needs. This means schools and decision makers having the willingness, time and ability to really listen to what young people and families are saying and to work alongside them to build school communities that have a chance of being truly inclusive. What a difference this would make.
As we wait for the clouds and rain to clear we wish you a restful summer break if you have one coming up, if you don’t, we hope the sun comes out and brightens up the days ahead. We’ll be back in September hopeful for a year that brings positive change and improvements to the lives of all children and young people.
