Help me manage my spina bifida at school

  • I may miss class time due to medical appointments or surgeries.
  • I may have gross motor difficulties and may have to use splints, casts, leg braces, canes, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs.
  • I may have difficulties with my eye–hand coordination, which can make things like handwriting difficult. I may need to have help and guidance from an occupational therapist.
  • I may need extra time moving around classrooms, between classes, and throughout school.
  • I may need special seats and desks or tables, as well as assistive technology and extra space for wheelchairs or other equipment.
  • I may have learning difficulties and problems with memory, attention, comprehension, and organization. If this is the case, please don’t give me many different instructions on one occasion, instead break down information into one task at a time. Use simple, clear and consistent language with visual and gestural support.
  • I may need frequent breaks because I find it difficult to concentrate for long periods of time and it is tiring.
  • I may need extra assistance and time to complete assignments.
  • I may need frequent bathroom breaks throughout the day.
  • I may be allergic to products that contain latex (natural rubber).
  • I should have an EHCP and/or individual education programme that outlines targets for me to focus on and the help I need to achieve them.
